My wife and I definitely need some help. We've never tried marriage counseling before, but I read something recently about Imago therapy for couples, and I am wondering if any one out there has tried this? I'm a bit of a cynic when it comes to the idea of therapy. It all sounds a too "Oprah" for me. I'd appreciate any feedback you can provide. Thanks

Hello. I am familiar with Imago Therapy. It is actually quite effective. It focuses first on communication skills. How to listen. Really listen, which in my experience, most people don''t know how to do. The communication skills taught in Imago Therapy are great because they not only help in communicating with your spouse, they help in communicating with other family members, co-workers, friends, etc. It also helps to explain why the two of you were attracted to each other in the first place, but were then faced with frustrations toward each other. One stipulation with Imago is that if there is a substance abuse or domestic violence issue, this must be tackled first, prior to beginning these Imago techniques. Imago Therapy is educational and involves activities/exercises for the two of you. I know what you mean about being "too Oprah," but this really is effective and a reputable therapy approach. Hope this helps.
